Unions representing baggage handlers announce suspension of industrial action over new contracts and shift patterns

» Airports - UK | Wednesday, April 04, 2012 • The Guardian
A planned baggage handlers' strike at Stansted airport over the Easter weekend has been called off.

Members of the GMB union had been due to walk out for three days of the four-day holiday weekend.

After further negotiations on Tuesday between the GMB and Unite unions and the baggage handlers' employer, Swissport, the unions announced they were suspending the industrial action.

The dispute is over new contracts and shift patterns, which the union claims could cost workers up to £1,000.

The GMB organiser Gary Pearce earlier indicated that if the company said it was willing to reconsider the new shift pattern they would call off the planned strike.

Swissport employs 150 people to handle baggage for several airlines including Ryanair, Thomsonfly and Thomas Cook. It said a drop in flights at Stansted has significantly reduced its revenues and new working patterns were needed to cut costs. Richard Prince, general manager of Swissport Stansted, said the changes meant job losses could be avoided.
